POLYFONIA

The International Network of Democratic and Community-based Relational Practice

We connect people from around the world involved in community-based, relational, and democratic services, including therapeutic communities, community therapy, and open dialogue, to work together to share ideas, inspire change, and support a democratic and relational revolution in mental health care.

Our aims are to:

Provide an inclusive platform for people worldwide, especially from the Global South and other regions, who support those experiencing mental distress.
Build new connections and highlight different perspectives to create a polyphony of diverse ideas and creative approaches that will help shape the future of democratic and relational approaches in mental health support.
Host online and in-person events where people can discuss and share ideas about democratic, community-based relational practice.
Share best practice through papers, videos, and articles that offer international perspectives.

Years of experience
Polyfonia was formerly known as the INDTC, the International Network of Democratic Therapeutic Communities, an organisation that for many years brought people together to share ideas that shape the future of therapeutic communities. In 2025, the INDTC committee decided to change our name and relaunch as Polyfonia: The International Network of Democratic and Community-based Relational Practice. This new name reflects our broader goal to connect people and organisations worldwide who are developing or supporting democratic, relational ways to support those experiencing mental distress.

WHAT WE DO

For several years now INDTC has included people from around the world working in a range of community based democratic services built around different models of relational practice including therapeutic communities, community therapy, and open dialogue. We are not just an organisation of therapeutic communities, but an international network of people and organisations practising in a range of democratic, community-based, relational ways.

The International Committee for INDTC therefore decided that we should change our name and relaunch INDTC as what we have really become: an inclusive network for individuals and organisations around the world working to develop or sustain democratic relational approaches to enabling people experiencing mental distress.

The International Committee hopes the new organisation will act as a sounding board for the many voices around the world that contribute to the democratic relational revolution in mental healthcare.

We are therefore proposing to set up a new international charity, and rename INDTC, as Polyfonia: The International Network of Democratic and Community-based Relational Practice
